Röntgenstråldiagnostik, also known as radiography, is a medical imaging technique that uses X-rays to visualize the internal structures of the body. This non-invasive procedure plays a crucial role in diagnosing a wide range of medical conditions. When X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed to varying degrees by different tissues. Dense tissues like bone absorb more X-rays and appear white on the resulting image, while less dense tissues such as soft tissues allow more X-rays to pass through, appearing in shades of gray. Air, such as that in the lungs, absorbs very few X-rays and appears black.

The X-ray beams are directed at the area of interest, and a detector captures the transmitted radiation. This captured data is then processed to create a two-dimensional image. Common applications of röntgenstråldiagnostik include detecting fractures, identifying pneumonia, locating foreign objects, and screening for certain types of cancer. While generally safe when used appropriately and with minimal radiation doses, precautions are taken to limit exposure, especially for pregnant women and children. Specialized techniques, such as contrast-enhanced radiography, can further improve the visualization of certain organs and blood vessels.
