Shareholders can profit from their investment in two primary ways. Firstly, through capital appreciation, where the market price of the shares increases over time, allowing them to sell for more than they paid. Secondly, through dividends, which are a portion of the company's profits distributed to shareholders, usually on a regular basis. Not all companies pay dividends, and the decision to do so is made by the company's board of directors.
