Régulons

Régulons are a family of transcription factors that play a crucial role in regulating gene expression. They are characterized by a helix-loop-helix (HLH) motif, which is essential for their DNA-binding and dimerization activities. These proteins are often involved in developmental processes and cellular differentiation.

The general function of régulons is to bind to specific DNA sequences, known as E-boxes, in the promoter regions of target genes. Upon binding, they can either activate or repress the transcription of these genes, thereby influencing a wide range of cellular functions.
