Réformés

Réformés refers to adherents of the Protestant Reformation, particularly those who followed the teachings of John Calvin and other reformers influenced by him. This term is often used to distinguish these Protestants from Lutherans and other reform movements. The Réformés were prominent in Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, Scotland, and parts of Germany.

The core tenets of the Réformés include a strong emphasis on God's sovereignty, predestination, and the authority of Scripture. They advocated for a simpler form of worship, often characterized by the absence of elaborate rituals and imagery, and focused on preaching and congregational singing. Key theological concepts include justification by faith alone and the priesthood of all believers.

In France, the Réformés were known as Huguenots. They faced significant persecution, most notably during the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in 1572. Despite periods of intense conflict and suppression, the Réformés established influential churches and intellectual traditions. Their organizational structure often emphasized presbyterian governance, with elected elders playing a significant role. The legacy of the Réformés can be seen in various Reformed and Presbyterian denominations worldwide.
