Rättsmedlingen
Rättsmedlingen is a Swedish government agency that provides mediation services within the justice system. The service facilitates restorative justice by offering mediated resolutions between victims and offenders for a limited range of offenses, with the goal of repairing harm, reducing the burden on the courts, and improving restitution and rehabilitation. Mediation is voluntary for both parties and confidential. Trained mediators guide discussions to reach an agreed outcome, which can include apologies, compensation, or other reparative measures. If an agreement is reached, it can be incorporated into the criminal process and may lead to the case being resolved without going to trial.
Rättsmedlingen works in close cooperation with prosecutors, police, and courts, and is available in several regions
Critics note that mediation outcomes depend on voluntary participation and may not be appropriate for all
