Räjähdysmekanismit refers to the scientific study of the processes that lead to an explosion. Explosions are rapid chemical reactions or physical processes that release a large amount of energy in a short period, creating a shock wave and often producing heat, light, and sound. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for various fields, including safety engineering, explosives detection, and military applications.

Chemical explosives typically involve substances that contain both fuel and oxidizer within their molecular structure or can readily access an oxidizer. When initiated by a spark, heat, or shock, these substances undergo rapid decomposition or combustion. This process generates a large volume of hot gases that expand violently. Physical explosions, such as steam explosions or nuclear explosions, operate on different principles. Steam explosions occur when a hot liquid comes into contact with a cooler liquid, causing rapid vaporization and expansion. Nuclear explosions involve the uncontrolled release of energy from nuclear fission or fusion reactions. The energy release in nuclear reactions is orders of magnitude greater than in chemical reactions.
