Ruostumisenkestävyys, or rust resistance, refers to the ability of a material, most commonly metals, to withstand corrosion, specifically the oxidation that leads to rust formation. Rust is a form of iron oxide, typically reddish-brown in appearance, which weakens and degrades the underlying metal. Materials are considered to have high rust resistance if they exhibit a slow rate of rust formation or are effectively immune to it under normal environmental conditions.

Several factors contribute to a material's rust resistance. The inherent chemical composition of the material plays a crucial role. For instance, stainless steel achieves its rust resistance through the addition of chromium, which forms a passive, self-healing oxide layer on the surface. Other metals, like aluminum, also develop a protective oxide layer. Surface treatments and coatings are common methods to enhance rust resistance in less resistant materials. Galvanization, the process of applying a protective zinc coating to iron or steel, is a well-known example. Painting, powder coating, and plating with corrosion-resistant metals like nickel or chromium also serve this purpose.

The environment in which a material is placed significantly impacts its rust resistance. Exposure to moisture, oxygen, salts, acids, and pollutants can accelerate corrosion. Therefore, materials that perform well in dry, indoor environments might show poor rust resistance when exposed to harsh outdoor conditions, such as coastal areas with salt spray or industrial zones with corrosive atmospheres. Understanding these environmental factors is essential when selecting materials for specific applications to ensure longevity and prevent premature failure due to rust.
