Runesmith is a craftsman or practitioner associated with the design and engraving of runic inscriptions on objects. The term derives from runes, the characters used in various Germanic alphabets, and smith, from Old English smið, meaning a skilled worker. In historical contexts, a runesmith might specialize in carving and preparing runes for talismans, monuments, weapons, or ceremonial objects, believing that the symbols themselves carry meaning, power, or protection.

Practice and techniques: Runesmiths work on diverse substrates such as stone, wood, metal, bone, or leather. Tools include gravers, chisels, knives, hammers, and burnishers. Inscriptions may be incised, inlaid, or painted; some practices employ pigments or metal inlays to enhance visibility and durability.
