Runecarving

Runecarving is the practice of inscribing magical runes onto objects to concentrate, regulate, or release supernatural energy. In fantasy literature and role-playing settings, runecarving is presented as a distinct technique from simple inscription, often performed by trained practitioners known as runecarvers or rune-smiths. Runes are stylized sigils tied to concepts such as wards, bindings, elemental forces, or power, and their effects depend on their symbolic meaning and the precision of the carving.

The technique typically requires suitable substrates such as wood, metal, stone, or bone, along with tools like engraving chisels, styluses, or knives, sometimes aided by enchantments that reveal energetic channels. The process usually involves designing the rune pattern, carving with care to the intended depth and orientation, and then charging or activating the runes through invocations, alignment with celestial bodies or ley lines, or channeling of energy from the maker or environment.
