Runebergsdag

Runebergsdag, or Runeberg's Day, is a Finnish celebration observed on 5 February that honors Johan Ludvig Runeberg, a Finnish–Swedish poet of the 19th century who is often regarded as Finland’s national poet. Runeberg’s work, including the epic The Tales of Ensign Stål (Fänrik Ståls Sägner), is seen as a cornerstone of Finnish national romanticism and identity.

The day is widely observed in Finland and among Swedish-speaking communities, though it is not a statutory public holiday. It is commonly marked by cultural events, readings of Runeberg’s poetry, and, most prominently, by baking and sharing Runebergtårta, a small almond-flavored cake. The cake is traditionally filled with raspberry jam and often served with coffee or milk. It is typically frosted or topped with icing and is closely associated with the February celebration.

Traditions surrounding Runebergsdag vary by region but commonly include culinary and literary observances. Schools, libraries, and cultural institutions may host readings or exhibitions about Runeberg and his works. In Sweden, some Swedish-speaking communities also participate in the day’s observances. The celebration serves as both a tribute to Runeberg’s literary legacy and a regional winter festival that brings people together through dessert and culture.
