Rumpulipasjärjestelmät

Rumpulipasjärjestelmät, a Finnish term, refers to drum brake systems. These are a type of internal expansion brake used in vehicles. A drum brake consists of a brake drum, which rotates with the wheel, and two brake shoes, located inside the drum. When the brake is applied, hydraulic pressure forces the brake shoes outwards against the inner surface of the rotating drum. This friction generates a retarding force, slowing or stopping the vehicle.

The primary components of a rumpulipasjärjestelmä include the brake drum, brake shoes, wheel cylinder, and brake springs. The wheel cylinder contains pistons that are pushed outward by brake fluid, forcing the shoes against the drum. Brake springs are used to retract the shoes when the brake pedal is released, ensuring they do not continuously rub against the drum.

Rumpulipasjärjestelmät were a dominant braking technology for many years, particularly on rear wheels or as parking brakes on vehicles equipped with disc brakes on the front. While disc brakes offer superior heat dissipation and performance, drum brakes remain cost-effective and durable for certain applications. Their simpler design and lower manufacturing cost have contributed to their continued use. However, they can be prone to brake fade under heavy use due to heat buildup. Maintenance typically involves inspecting and replacing worn brake shoes and drums, as well as checking the brake fluid level.
