Ruka

Ruka is a term with several distinct meanings in different cultural and linguistic contexts.

As a traditional Mapuche dwelling, a ruka (also spelled ruca) is a type of round or oval house used by the indigenous Mapuche people of south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina. Built with a wooden frame, thatched roofing, and packed earth floors, the ruka centers on a hearth and serves as a domestic and social space reflecting Mapuche construction techniques and cultural practices.

Ruka is also the name of a well-known ski resort area in northern Finland, located on Rukatunturi near Kuusamo. The resort is popular for alpine and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and year-round outdoor activities such as hiking and mountain biking. It has developed infrastructure for tourism, including lifts, trails, and accommodation.

In several Slavic languages, notably Russian, Czech, Slovak, Croatian, and Serbian, ruka (Cyrillic рука) means "hand" or "arm" and appears in many idioms and compound words related to manual actions or relationships.

Ruka is used as a given name in various cultures. In Japanese it can be written with different kanji, producing multiple meanings, and is used for both males and females; it also appears as a character name in popular media. The term may appear in other contexts such as place names, surnames, and artistic titles.
