Ruhenzustand

Ruhenzustand (more commonly spelled Ruhezustand in standard German) refers to the state of rest or minimal activity of a system, in which no sustained motion or energy exchange is occurring. The term is used across disciplines to describe a baseline or idle condition, and it often implies that the system can transition to a more active state when required.

In classical mechanics and physics, a body is in the rest state when its velocity relative to a chosen reference frame is zero. If external forces are present but balanced, a body may still remain at rest. The concept contrasts with motion states and with dynamic states that involve continuous energy input or movement.

In engineering and electronics, Ruh- or Ruhezustand describes a standby or idle mode. Systems in this state consume minimal power while preserving the ability to switch quickly to full operation. The idea of a rest state is important for energy efficiency, device reliability, and user convenience.

In neuroscience and physiology, resting-state concepts describe activity when a system is not engaged in a specific task. Resting-state networks in the brain refer to patterns of functional connectivity observed when a person is not performing a defined activity. Resting metabolic rate describes the energy expenditure of a person at rest in a neutral environment.
