Rozsdásodásgátlókat

Rozsdásodásgátlókat (plural of "rozsdásodásgátló") are substances or coatings applied to metal surfaces to prevent or slow down the oxidation process that causes rust. The term is Hungarian for “rust inhibitors,” reflecting its common use in areas where metal corrosion is a concern.

The primary function of a rust inhibitor is to interrupt the electrochemical reactions that lead to iron oxide formation. By interfering with electron transfer, blocking active sites on the metal surface, or forming a protective film, inhibitors reduce the rate of corrosion and extend the service life of metal components.

Inhibitor systems are classified mainly into chemical inhibitors, polymeric coatings, and cathodic protection agents. Chemical inhibitors include amines, phosphates, and chromates, which are added to the environment or mixed with concrete. Polymeric coatings such as epoxy or polyurethane create a physical barrier that seals the metal from moisture and oxygen. Cathodic protection relies on an external current or sacrificial anodes to keep the metal at a lower, less corrosive potential.

These materials are widely used in automotive parts, offshore structures, pipelines, and building infrastructure. Application methods vary—from dip coating and spraying to infusion into porous substrates. Choice of inhibitor depends on exposure conditions, temperature, and desired lifespan.

Rust inhibitors pose environmental and safety considerations. Some historically used chromates are toxic and may be restricted by regulations. Modern formulations aim for lower environmental impact while maintaining effectiveness. The industry continually develops greener alternatives, such as biodegradable polymer coatings and non‑toxic organophosphorus inhibitors.
