Rotorsystems refers to the complete assembly of rotors and associated components used to convert energy into rotational motion or to respond with rotation in various machines. The term encompasses rotor assemblies in electrical machines, turbomachinery, flywheels, and rotorcraft propulsion systems, where precise rotor dynamics are essential.

In electrical machines, rotor systems are the moving part of motors and generators, featuring designs such as squirrel-cage rotors and wound rotors, and interacting with stators to produce torque. In turbomachinery and power transmission, rotor systems include disks, blades, spacers, shafts, and couplings that carry high-speed rotation.

Common components across rotor systems include shafts, bearings, seals, housings, lubrication systems, dampers, balancing weights, and rotor disks or laminations. The arrangement is chosen to optimize stiffness, strength, and dynamic stability, while minimizing losses and heat.

Design considerations focus on rotor dynamics, critical speeds, resonance, aerodynamic or aerodynamic-structural loading (for turbomachinery), thermal effects, lubrication, and contamination control. Engineers analyze balancing, runout, misalignment, rotor-to-stator gaps, and electromagnetic coupling (in electric machines) to ensure reliability.

Maintenance and testing for rotor systems emphasize alignment checks, balancing and vibration monitoring, bearing maintenance, seal integrity, and non-destructive testing of components. Standards often specify tolerances, lubrication intervals, and inspection regimes to mitigate failure risks in high-speed operation.
