Rotavirusrokotusta refers to the vaccination against rotavirus infection. Rotaviruses are a common cause of severe diarrheal disease in infants and young children worldwide. Before the introduction of vaccines, rotavirus was responsible for millions of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths annually in young children globally.

The rotavirus vaccine is administered orally in a series of doses, typically starting in early infancy. It works by introducing weakened strains of the rotavirus to the child's body, stimulating the immune system to develop antibodies against the virus without causing illness. This prepares the child's body to fight off future infections with the actual rotavirus.

There are several types of rotavirus vaccines available, with the two most common being monovalent and pentavalent. The monovalent vaccine protects against the most common strain, G1P[8], while the pentavalent vaccine offers broader protection against five common serotypes. The vaccine is highly effective in preventing severe rotavirus disease, reducing the need for hospitalization and intensive care.

Side effects from the rotavirus vaccine are generally mild and infrequent. Some infants may experience temporary fussiness, mild diarrhea, or vomiting. In very rare cases, a serious side effect called intussusception, a blockage of the intestine, has been associated with rotavirus vaccines. However, the benefits of preventing severe rotavirus gastroenteritis are considered to far outweigh the minimal risks. Public health organizations strongly recommend rotavirus vaccination as part of routine childhood immunization schedules.
