Rootinterwoven is a theoretical framework for studying how plant root systems form interconnected networks, and how these networks interact with environmental gradients and neighboring plants. The term emphasizes the dual aspects of growth: the physical interweaving of root axes and the abstract network topology that supports resource transport and information flow.

Its central idea is to model root architecture as an interwoven graph, with branching endpoints as leaves and internal nodes as junctions. Growth rules capture local decision making, such as directional bias toward moisture or nutrients, crowding avoidance, and carbon allocation rules, producing emergent patterns that resemble real rooting systems.

Modeling approaches combine graph theory, fractal geometry, and agent-based simulations. Parameters include growth rate, branching probability, root radius, and responsiveness to soil moisture, nutrients, and the presence of competitors. Fields representing resource availability guide edge extension and branching, yielding multi-scale, self-similar structures.
