Roopkund

Roopkund is a high-altitude glacial lake located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. Situated at an elevation of approximately 5,020 meters (16,470 feet) above sea level, it is a popular destination for trekkers and adventure enthusiasts. The lake is known for its striking turquoise waters, surrounded by snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas.

What makes Roopkund particularly famous is the presence of numerous human skeletons scattered around its shores and in the shallow waters. These remains, believed to date back to the 9th century CE, have led to much speculation and scientific investigation. Early theories suggested the skeletons belonged to a lost army or a group of pilgrims who perished in a sudden storm or avalanche.

Modern genetic and archaeological studies have provided more insight. Research indicates that the remains are of a group of people who likely died from injuries consistent with blunt force trauma, possibly caused by falling ice. Evidence also suggests the group comprised individuals from different origins, possibly traveling together. The exact circumstances and purpose of their journey remain subjects of ongoing research and debate.

The trek to Roopkund is challenging, passing through varied terrains, including dense forests, meadows, and rocky paths. It is typically undertaken during the summer months when the snow melts and the passes are accessible.
