Rondallas

Rondallas are traditional string ensembles known in Spanish-speaking regions and in the Philippines, where the plural form rondallas refers to multiple groups or the general concept. The term originates from Spanish musical practice and denotes a group that performs music with plucked instruments and voices, often in social and ceremonial settings.

In Spain and many Latin American countries, rondallas historically center on a core of plucked strings such as bandurría, laúd (lute), and guitars, sometimes supplemented by mandolins, violins, and other instruments, along with a vocal section. The ensembles can range from small community groups to larger municipal or regional performances, and they frequently perform traditional folk songs, popular tunes, and light classical pieces.

In the Philippines, the rondalla tradition is particularly prominent in schools and universities and forms an important part of cultural and educational programs. A typical Philippine rondalla lineup includes bandurría, laud, octavina, guitar, and bass, with occasional percussion. Repertoire spans Filipino folk songs, opera-inspired arrangements, and contemporary songs adapted for a string ensemble. Philippine rondallas compete in festivals and events and have contributed to a distinct national style of group string performance.
