Rollercompacted

Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) is a paving material that combines cementitious concrete with the placement method of asphalt. It uses a dry, low-slump mix that is transported by dump trucks, spread with earthmoving equipment, and compacted by heavy rollers to form a dense, concrete-like pavement that cures to structural strength without formwork.

The mixture typically consists of cementitious binder, aggregates, and a relatively low amount of water. The aggregates are selected for strength and interlock, and supplementary cementitious materials such as fly ash or slag may be included to improve workability and durability. The proportioning emphasizes a stiff, cohesive material that can be placed in relatively thick lifts and compacted in a single pass.

Construction involves preparing the subgrade or base, delivering RCC by trucks, spreading with graders or pavers, and compacting with pneumatic or steel-wheeled rollers. After compaction, finishing steps are minimal compared with conventional concrete, with joints provided to control shrinkage and temperature effects. Curing methods may include surface sealing, misting, or water-based curing compounds to ensure adequate moisture during early strength gain.

Applications include road and highway pavements, airport runways and taxiways, industrial site pavements, parking lots, and dam or spillway structures. RCC offers rapid construction, reduced cement content relative to traditional concrete, excellent durability, and good resistance to heavy loads and abrasion.

Limitations include a rougher surface texture unless specialty finishing is used, greater sensitivity to material quality and moisture content, and the need for skilled quality control and curing practices to achieve design strength and long-term performance.
