Originating in the early 2010s within Estonian design, education, and research communities, ristteestimise emerged as a heuristic for breaking silos and encouraging comparative analysis across fields. The term combines elements implying 'cross' (rist) and 'testing' or 'evaluation' (testimine), signaling a deliberate crossing of methodological boundaries.

Practice involves several stages: framing a problem in terms reachable across domains, selecting compatible metrics from each domain, conducting parallel or sequential tests, and synthesizing results to draw cross-domain conclusions.

Applications include product development, urban planning, educational assessment, and policy design where solutions must function across different user contexts.

Advantages include increased robustness and resilience, better understanding of transferability, and enhanced collaboration across disciplines.
