Riistvararikke

Riistvararikke, also known as the "wildlife trade," refers to the commercial exchange of wild animals and plants, their parts, and derivatives. This trade encompasses a wide range of activities, including the capture, transport, and sale of wildlife, as well as the trade in products derived from wildlife such as fur, ivory, and traditional medicines. The term "riistvararikke" is derived from the Finnish words "riista" meaning game or wildlife, and "vararikke" meaning trade.

The wildlife trade is driven by various factors, including cultural beliefs, economic incentives, and traditional practices. In some cultures, certain animal parts are considered valuable for medicinal or spiritual purposes. Economically, the trade can provide livelihoods for communities in rural areas, where alternative employment opportunities may be limited. However, the wildlife trade also faces significant criticism due to its negative impacts on biodiversity and the sustainability of wildlife populations.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is an international agreement aimed at ensuring that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. CITES classifies species into different appendices based on their level of threat, with Appendix I species being the most threatened and Appendix III species being those where trade is not permitted except in very specific circumstances.

Despite the efforts to regulate the wildlife trade, illegal and unsustainable practices continue to pose threats to many species. Poaching, habitat destruction, and the demand for exotic pets and traditional medicines remain significant challenges. Addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach that includes stricter enforcement of international agreements, community engagement, and the development of sustainable alternatives to wildlife products.
