Reunalaitteet

Reunalaitteet are specialized plant structures used for repelling or deterring herbivores and unwanted animals. The term originates from Finnish, where "reuna" means edge or border, and "laitteet" means devices or arrangements. These structures are commonly found in various ecosystems as part of plants' defense mechanisms.

Reunalaitteet can take various forms, including spines, thorns, prickles, and tough, leathery leaf margins. They serve primarily to protect plants from browsing animals such as deer, elk, or insects that threaten their survival. Their effectiveness varies depending on their structure, density, and placement.

These structures are often strategically positioned along the edges or vulnerable parts of plants, such as leaf margins, stems, or fruit surfaces. Their physical properties—rigidity, sharpness, or toughness—may physically hinder animals from biting or grasping the plant tissues, while some may also emit chemical deterrents.
