Retransission

Retransission is a neologism used in some technical and media discourse to denote the re-emission of content or signals after a transition. It is not a standardized term and has no formal entry in major dictionaries. As a result, its meaning varies by field.

In telecommunications and data networks, the term may describe the process of transmitting a data unit again after a transition event, such as a handover, channel change, or network reconfiguration. The aim is to preserve continuity and reduce loss or delay during the transition; this sense is closely related to, but distinct from, conventional retransmission by stressing the transitional context.

In media distribution and digital publishing, retranmission may describe reissuing content across platforms after a transition in licensing, platform strategy, or audience targeting. It highlights continuity of access and reach across a changing ecosystem, rather than the technical reliability of a single data stream.

Origins and usage: Coined in the early 2020s; appeared in several technical blogs and some academic discussions. Because of its informal status, there is no consensus on a single definition, and usage can overlap with established terms such as retransmission or republication.

Criticism: The term risks confusion with the widely used "retransmission" and may be seen as redundant. Some prefer to reserve it for discussions that explicitly foreground transition phenomena; others avoid it altogether until standardized.
