Retranscribing

Retranscribing refers to the process of transcribing audio or video content a second time. This is typically done to improve the accuracy of an initial transcription. The first transcription might have been performed by an automated service, a less experienced human transcriber, or under less than ideal audio conditions. Retranscribing involves having a new transcriber, often a more experienced one, listen to the audio again and create a fresh transcript.

The primary goal of retranscribing is to correct errors, fill in missing words, clarify ambiguous sections, and ensure a higher degree of fidelity to the original spoken content. This is particularly important for critical applications such as legal proceedings, medical dictations, academic research, and journalism where accuracy is paramount. While automated transcription services have improved significantly, they can still struggle with accents, background noise, technical jargon, or fast speech, making human retranscribing a valuable quality control measure.

There are different approaches to retranscribing. Some services offer a simple "proofreading" option where a second person reviews the initial transcript for errors. Others provide a complete "re-do" where the entire audio is transcribed from scratch.
