The term originates from the Greek words *retina* and *topos* (meaning "place"), highlighting the spatial preservation of visual input as it travels through the visual pathway.

The primary visual cortex, located in the occipital lobe, is the first major destination for retinal signals after they are transmitted via the optic nerves and optic chiasm. Here, the retina’s spatial layout is preserved in a topographic manner, meaning adjacent points on the retina correspond to adjacent points in the visual cortex. This retinotopic organization continues through subsequent stages of visual processing, including areas such as V2, V3, and beyond, ensuring that spatial relationships in the visual field remain intact.
