Retinanäytöt, or Retina displays, are a marketing term used by Apple Inc. to describe their high-resolution displays for iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches. The core concept behind a Retina display is that the pixel density is so high that, at a normal viewing distance, an individual pixel is indistinguishable to the human eye. This results in sharper text, more detailed images, and a generally more immersive visual experience compared to displays with lower pixel densities.

Apple claims that for the iPhone, the resolution is so high that a human eye at a distance of 10-12 inches cannot differentiate between individual pixels. The exact pixel count and resolution vary across different Apple devices. For example, the original Retina display on the iPhone 4 had a resolution of 326 pixels per inch (ppi). Later iterations, such as on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, introduced even higher resolutions and larger screen sizes, maintaining or exceeding the perceived sharpness. Similarly, iPads and MacBooks also feature Retina displays with resolutions optimized for their respective screen sizes and typical viewing distances. The Apple Watch also utilizes Retina displays, with resolutions tailored to its small form factor. The technology behind Retina displays involves utilizing advanced manufacturing techniques to pack more pixels into a given area without significantly increasing power consumption or cost.
