Retikulumot

Retikulumot is a seldom‑documented genus of marine annelid worms that was first described in the early 20th century by Finnish zoologist J. K. Haapalainen. The name derives from the Latin words *reticulum* meaning “mesh” and the suffix *‑mot*, indicating a patterned appearance. Species within this genus typically possess a thoracic region with a distinctive reticulated skin pattern, which is thought to play a role in camouflage against predator detection in Arctic benthic environments.

Recent expediations to the eastern Arctic shelf have confirmed the presence of *Retikulumot glacialis*, the type species, at depths ranging from 20 to 100 metres. These worms are small, measuring 2–4 centimetres in length, and they occupy soft sediment habitats where they feed on detritus and microalgae. Their burrowing activity is believed to contribute to sediment turnover and improve local oxygenation.

Taxonomically, *Retikulumot* is classified within the order Capitellidae, family Reticulomotidae, and is distinguished from related genera by a combination of features including a segmented body, the presence of eversible proboscis, and a unique set of setae that form a mesh‑like arrangement along the ventral surface. Molecular analyses of mitochondrial COI sequences have suggested that the genus is monophyletic, but its precise relationship to other capitellid genera remains partially unresolved.

The conservation status of *Retikulumot* species has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN; however, the limited distribution and vulnerability of Arctic marine ecosystems to climate change and increased shipping traffic raise potential concerns for long‑term viability. Further research into their reproductive biology, population dynamics, and ecological role is needed to fully assess their resilience to environmental pressures.
