Retikulinäytteiden, often translated as reticulin stains or reticulin preparations, are microscopic examination techniques used in histology to visualize the reticular connective tissue within biological samples. Reticular fibers are a type of delicate, branching collagen fiber that forms a supportive meshwork in organs such as the spleen, liver, lymph nodes, and bone marrow. These fibers are crucial for the structural integrity and function of these tissues, serving as a framework for cellular components and blood vessels.

The staining process for reticulin typically involves a silver impregnation method. This method utilizes silver salts that are selectively deposited onto the reticular fibers, making them visible under a light microscope. Different silver staining protocols exist, such as the Gomori reticulin stain or the Wilder stain, each with slight variations in reagents and procedures to enhance contrast and specificity. The stained reticular network appears black or dark brown against a lighter background, allowing pathologists to assess its distribution, density, and any abnormalities.

Retikulinäytteiden are invaluable diagnostic tools in pathology. They are used to identify and characterize various conditions affecting the reticular framework. For instance, changes in the reticulin pattern can indicate fibrosis, cirrhosis of the liver, or the presence of certain tumors. In hematopathology, reticulin stains are essential for evaluating bone marrow biopsies, helping to diagnose conditions like myelofibrosis, where there is an abnormal proliferation of reticular fibers that disrupts normal marrow architecture and hematopoiesis.
