Retentieradius

Retentieradius is a descriptive term used to denote the effective distance or spatial extent around a point or facility within which retention of material, agents, people, or effects is likely to occur. The word combines a form of "retentie" (retention) with "radius" and is applied across disciplines to express how far an influence that causes retention extends.

In hydrology and stormwater management, retentieradius can describe the area from which runoff is captured by a retention basin or infiltration system. In ecology it may refer to the distance over which organisms, seeds, or nutrients remain within or return to a habitat patch. In urban planning and marketing contexts the term is used informally to characterize the catchment area within which customers, residents, or users continue to engage with a service or location. In telecommunications and transportation studies it may denote zones where connection, dwell time, or mode choice is retained.

Measurement approaches vary by field and include spatial analysis with GIS buffers, empirical observation, tracking technologies, modeling of flows or movements, and survey data. The concept is scale- and context-dependent: its meaning and the methods used to estimate it depend on the retained entity, landscape, and temporal considerations.
