Restströmskydd

Restströmskydd, also known as Restström protection, is a method used in the field of electrical engineering to protect electrical equipment from overcurrent conditions. It is named after its inventor, Carl Restström, a Swedish engineer who developed the concept in the early 20th century. The primary purpose of Restströmskydd is to ensure the safety and longevity of electrical systems by preventing damage from excessive current flow.

The system operates by detecting overcurrent conditions and rapidly interrupting the power supply to the protected equipment. This interruption is achieved through a combination of a thermal element and an electrical switch. The thermal element, typically made of a bimetallic strip, expands when heated by the current, causing the switch to open and disconnect the power. Once the current returns to normal levels, the thermal element cools down, allowing the switch to close and restore power.
