Restritivas

Restritivas is the feminine plural form of restritiva, an adjective used in Portuguese to describe things that impose or relate to restriction. The term is employed across different fields to indicate actions, rules, or constructs that limit something, such as rights, movements, or resources.

In law and public policy, medidas restritivas are actions that constrain rights or freedoms or regulate activities. Examples include travel bans, export or investment controls, and environmental or zoning restrictions. Such measures are typically established by legislation, regulations, or executive orders and can be temporary or lasting, unilateral or multilateral, and subject to due process and international law.

In linguistics and grammar, cláusulas restritivas (restrictive clauses) specify a subset of referents within a larger class and are essential to the meaning of a sentence. In Portuguese syntax, a restrictive clause is not set off by commas, whereas a non-restrictive clause is. Example: Os livros que estão na mesa são meus. Here, the clause that estão na mesa restricts the reference to books on the table.

Outside of law and linguistics, restritivas can describe policies, practices, or rules that curb behavior, access, or resources. The concept is often contrasted with permissive or expansive approaches and is evaluated in terms of its effectiveness, legality, and impact on rights, markets, and social welfare.
