Restorations denotes processes or periods in which something is returned to a previous state or regime. The term is used across cultural heritage, political history, and institutional contexts, and it can refer to actions aimed at reviving or reestablishing an older condition, authority, or form.

In conservation and heritage practice, restoration describes actions taken to repair, preserve, and stabilize artifacts, artworks, buildings, and landscapes. The goal is to maintain authenticity while preventing further decay, and methods may include cleaning, consolidation, stabilization, and controlled reconstruction. Ethical considerations emphasize reversibility, thorough documentation, and respect for the object’s or site’s history, with debates about how much intervention is appropriate or necessary.

In political history, restorations concern the reestablishment of former regimes or authorities after disruption. Notable examples include the English Restoration, which reintroduced the monarchy under Charles II following the Interregnum after the Commonwealth era. The Spanish Restoration refers to the return of the Bourbon monarchy after the First Spanish Republic, beginning in 1874 and lasting until the Second Republic. The Portuguese Restoration began in 1640 with the reestablishment of independence from Spain and the House of Braganza, continuing through the late 17th century. Across various regions and periods, restorations often reflect broader shifts in governance, legitimacy, and national identity.

The term also covers non-political uses, such as the restoration of libraries, monuments, and cultural institutions, where efforts aim to recover or preserve historical appearance, function, and significance while acknowledging the objects’ or sites’ evolving contexts.
