The principle behind resonant coupling relies on the oscillation of electric and magnetic fields. When one resonant circuit is excited, it generates oscillating electromagnetic fields. If a second resonant circuit, tuned to the same frequency, is brought into proximity, these oscillating fields induce a current within the second circuit, causing it to oscillate as well. Key factors influencing the efficiency of resonant coupling include the quality factor (Q factor) of the resonant circuits, the distance between them, and their relative orientation. A higher Q factor indicates less energy loss within the circuit, leading to stronger oscillating fields and more efficient energy transfer. The efficiency decreases rapidly with increasing distance.
