Reprocessingaktiviteter refers to the processes involved in treating and handling spent nuclear fuel and other radioactive waste materials. The primary goal of reprocessing is to recover valuable fissile materials, such as plutonium and uranium, from spent fuel for reuse in nuclear reactors. This can reduce the volume of high-level waste requiring long-term storage and potentially provide a source of fuel for future energy production.

The reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel typically involves chemical separation techniques. Spent fuel rods are first cooled and then dissolved in strong acids. This solution is then subjected to a series of chemical treatments designed to separate the uranium, plutonium, and other fission products. Uranium can be re-enriched and fabricated into new fuel. Plutonium, also a fissile material, can be mixed with uranium to create mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel, which can be used in certain types of reactors.

However, reprocessing also generates significant quantities of radioactive waste, including fission products and transuranic elements. These wastes still require careful management and disposal. Different countries have varying policies and capabilities regarding reprocessing. Some nations, like France and Japan, have active reprocessing programs, while others, such as the United States, have historically chosen not to reprocess spent fuel due to proliferation concerns and economic considerations. The decision to reprocess is complex, involving technical, economic, environmental, and security factors.
