Representációk, or representations, denote ways of describing, modeling, or expressing a concept, object, or system in a distinct form. The idea appears across many disciplines, from mathematics and physics to linguistics and music, each tailoring the notion to its own domain.

In mathematics, a representation is a homomorphism from an abstract algebraic structure, such as a group or algebra, into a concrete structure of linear transformations acting on a vector space. This permits abstract elements to be analyzed using matrices, enabling computational methods and revealing deep properties of the underlying structure. Classical examples include the standard representation of the symmetric group and the spin representations of the rotation group. Representation theory, the study of these maps, plays a central role in modern algebra.

Physics adopts representations to describe symmetry transformations acting on physical systems. For example, the Lorentz group’s representations classify elementary particle types in quantum field theory. Representations also appear in quantum mechanics, where operators acting on a Hilbert space represent observables; unitary representations encode conserved quantities.

In linguistics, representations concern the mapping between linguistic forms and meaning. Syntactic structures may be represented using trees, while semantic networks portray relationships between concepts. Computational linguistic models often rely on vector space representations, such as word embeddings, to capture similarity and context.

Music uses representations to transcribe sound into readable notation, or to encode timbre and pitch relations. Graphic scores and digital formats provide alternative forms that represent musical ideas for performers and listeners.
