Representsidentity

Representsidentity is a term used in mathematics and theoretical computer science to denote the property of a representation or functor that maps the identity element of a domain to the identity element of the codomain. In algebra, a representation is a homomorphism that preserves structure; the identity element e of the domain must map to the identity transformation on the target space. The phrase is sometimes used in expository writing to emphasize this aspect of a representation, and in some texts the property is literally called representsidentity.

In group representation theory, a representation ρ: G → GL(V) satisfies ρ(e) = I, where e is the group identity and I is the identity linear operator. In category theory, a functor F: C → D preserves identities when F(id_X) = id_{F(X)} for every object X in C; this follows from the functor conditions that also require preservation of composition.

The concept is fundamental for preserving neutral elements: it guarantees that “doing nothing” in the domain corresponds to “doing nothing” in the codomain. Violations occur with non-unital homomorphisms or with structures where identity is not mapped to identity, leading to distorted algebraic behavior. The notion also informs design principles in programming languages and data-transformation, where preserving identity elements ensures that identity-bearing values remain unchanged by a transformation that should act as a structural map.
