The word is the plural genitive form of reparatiivinen, which in this context is borrowed from the English term “reparative” (often rendered as “reparative therapy” or “conversion therapy”). In Finnish usage, phrases such as reparatiivisen hoidon or reparatiivisten toimenpiteiden refer to these practices.

Reparatiivisten interventions have been promoted in some religious, counseling, or self-help settings under the claim that sexual orientation or gender identity can be changed.
