Rengaspaine

Rengaspaine is the internal air pressure of a pneumatic tire, typically measured in pounds per square inch (psi), kilopascals (kPa) or bar. It is a critical parameter affecting vehicle safety, handling, fuel efficiency and tire longevity. Recommended pressure values are provided by vehicle manufacturers on a placard inside the driver’s doorjamb or in the owner’s manual; these values account for vehicle load and intended use.

Proper inflation ensures an even contact patch between tire and road, optimizing traction, steering response and braking performance. Underinflation increases rolling resistance, raises fuel consumption, accelerates tread wear on the outer edges, and can cause overheating or structural tire damage. Overinflation reduces the contact patch, leading to uneven center tread wear, a harsher ride and reduced grip, particularly on wet surfaces.

Tire pressure should be checked with a reliable gauge when tires are cold, because pressure rises with temperature; a common rule of thumb is roughly a 1 psi change for every 10 °F (≈5.6 °C) change in ambient temperature. Modern vehicles increasingly use Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) to alert drivers to significant pressure loss; however, TPMS does not replace regular manual checks. Heavy loads, towing, high-speed driving and long-distance travel may require adjustments to recommended pressures. Proper maintenance includes periodic inspection for damage, maintaining recommended pressures, and timely tire rotation and replacement to preserve safety and performance.
