Reneszánszban

Reneszánszban is the Hungarian expression used to describe things occurring during the Renaissance, a broad cultural and intellectual movement in Europe roughly from the 14th to the 17th century. The term reneszánsz refers to the era itself, while reneszánszban means “in the Renaissance.”

The Renaissance originated in Italy, revived classical antiquity, and promoted humanism—an emphasis on human potential, education, and critical inquiry. It brought changes across arts, science, politics, and religion: renewed interest in ancient Greek and Roman literature, new artistic techniques such as perspective in painting, advances in astronomy and anatomy, the spread of printing, and reforms in education and philology. The movement gradually spread to Northern Europe and influenced wider social and cultural life, helping to lay the groundwork for the early modern period.

In Hungary and Central Europe, Renaissance ideas arrived through trade, travel, and scholarly exchange. The courts and cities hosted humanist teachers and printers, and royal and noble patronage supported literary and artistic activity. The Bibliotheca Corviniana, established by King Matthias Corvinus, stands as a notable example of Renaissance culture in Hungary. Hungarian humanists such as Janus Pannonius contributed to the revival of Latin literature and reforming education, reflecting broader European trends.

The Renaissance eventually gave way to early modern developments in science, religion, and statecraft, but its legacy persisted in education, arts, and cultural self-understanding. The Hungarian term reneszánszban continues to be used to situate events, texts, and figures within that historical period.
