Rendvédelem

Rendvédelem is a term used in Hungary to describe the system of public authorities and activities dedicated to maintaining public order and safety through law enforcement. It covers the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes, enforcement of laws, maintenance of public order, traffic safety, and coordination of emergency response and safety measures. The central actor is the police service (rendőrség), which operates under the Interior Ministry and is organized in regional units and specialized departments. Other agencies and bodies contribute to rendvédelem as part of public safety and security, all working in coordination with local governments and the judiciary.

Legal basis for rendvédelem rests on the country’s constitutional framework, criminal law, and administrative law. Its mandate is to protect persons and property, safeguard constitutional order, and uphold human rights while enforcing laws.
