Remlichten

Remlichten, also known as brake lights, are essential safety features on all motor vehicles. Their primary function is to alert other road users that the vehicle is decelerating or stopping. When the driver applies the brake pedal, a switch activates the remlichten, causing them to illuminate.

In most countries, remlichten are mandated to be red in color and are typically positioned at the rear of the vehicle, often integrated with the taillights. The intensity of the remlichten is usually higher than that of the regular taillights, ensuring they are clearly visible even in adverse weather conditions such as fog, heavy rain, or bright sunlight.

The presence and proper functioning of remlichten are critical for preventing rear-end collisions. Drivers behind a vehicle can quickly understand the intentions of the vehicle ahead, allowing them to adjust their speed and braking accordingly. Regular checks of remlichten are recommended as part of vehicle maintenance to ensure they are operational. Some modern vehicles also incorporate a third, high-mounted brake light, often referred to as a center brake light or CHMSL (Center High Mounted Stop Lamp), to provide an additional, more visible signal of braking.
