Remisehashing

Remisehashing is a technique used in computer science, particularly in the context of hashing algorithms. It refers to the process of recomputing a hash value for data that has already been hashed. This might be done for various reasons, such as to adapt a hash to a new data structure, to mitigate certain types of attacks, or to improve performance in specific scenarios.

One common application of remisehashing is in dynamic hash tables. When a hash table needs to resize, either due to too many collisions or to accommodate more data, the existing hash function might no longer be optimal. In such cases, the elements are rehashed using a potentially new or adjusted hash function, and placed into the resized table. This ensures that the distribution of keys remains efficient.

Another context where remisehashing can be relevant is in security. Certain cryptographic hash functions or hashing schemes might incorporate a remisehashing step as a defense mechanism against specific attacks, such as rainbow table attacks. By rehashing the output of an initial hash, the attacker's precomputed tables become less effective, requiring more computational resources to find a matching input.

The term "remisehashing" itself implies a secondary or subsequent hashing operation. It's not a fundamentally new hashing algorithm but rather a procedural application of hashing. The specific implementation and purpose of remisehashing depend heavily on the overall system or algorithm it's part of.
