Religionshistoria, or the history of religion, is the academic study of religious beliefs, practices, institutions, and experiences across time and cultures. It seeks to understand how religions arise, develop, interact with social and political life, and shape human communities without endorsing any particular creed.

Scholars in this field use archaeology, philology, textual criticism, anthropology, sociology, and history. They analyze material remains, sacred texts, and oral traditions, comparing beliefs and rituals within and across societies to trace continuities, transformations, and exchanges, as well as the roles of priests, temples, and ecclesiastical authorities.

Chronologically, the subject covers prehistoric and ancient religions, classical civilizations, medieval and early modern developments, and modern and postcolonial contexts. It examines the spread of world religions, religious reform movements, syncretism, and the global encounter of traditions through migration, trade, conquest, and technology.

Key themes include the origins of religion, ritual practice, sacred texts, moral and political authority, religious reform and dissent, secularization, and religious pluralism. The field also studies interreligious dialogue, persecution, and the reception of religion in art, law, education, and public life.
