Releasetekijät

Releasetekijät, a Finnish term often translated as "release factors," are crucial components in biological protein synthesis. These specialized proteins play a vital role in terminating the translation process, which is the mechanism by which genetic information encoded in messenger RNA (mRNA) is used to create a specific protein.

Translation begins at a start codon on the mRNA and proceeds along the molecule, reading codons (three-nucleotide sequences) and recruiting corresponding transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules carrying amino acids. This process continues until a stop codon is encountered on the mRNA. Unlike codons that specify an amino acid, stop codons do not have corresponding tRNA molecules.

This is where releasetekijät come into play. When a stop codon reaches the A-site of the ribosome (the cellular machinery responsible for protein synthesis), a specific releasetekijä binds to the stop codon. This binding triggers a series of events that leads to the hydrolysis of the bond between the newly synthesized polypeptide chain and the last tRNA. Consequently, the completed protein is released from the ribosome, and the ribosomal subunits dissociate from the mRNA, ready to begin a new round of translation.

There are typically multiple types of releasetekijät, each recognizing one or more of the three stop codons (UAA, UAG, UGA). Their precise function is essential for accurate protein production and for ensuring that translation terminates at the correct point, preventing the synthesis of aberrant or non-functional proteins. Defects in releasetekijä function can have significant implications for cellular health and can be associated with various diseases.
