It refers to a method of referring to cells in a spreadsheet or database where the reference is based on the position of the current cell rather than its absolute address. This is in contrast to absolute notation, where the reference always points to the same specific cell regardless of where the formula is located.

In spreadsheets, relative referencing is the default behavior for cell references. For example, if you have a formula in cell C1 that references cell A1, and you copy that formula to cell C2, the reference will automatically adjust to A2. This is highly useful for performing calculations on entire rows or columns of data without needing to manually update each formula.
