Reklamspårning, often translated as advertising tracking, refers to the practice of collecting data about user behavior across different websites and applications to understand their interests and serve them targeted advertisements. This process typically involves the use of various technologies, most notably cookies, pixels, and mobile advertising IDs. When a user visits a website or uses an app that displays advertisements, a small piece of code, often a cookie or pixel, is placed on their device. This code then communicates with advertising servers, recording information such as the pages visited, the products viewed, and the time spent on each.

This collected data is then used to build a profile of the user's online activities and preferences. This profile allows advertisers to segment their audience and deliver ads that are more likely to be relevant to individual users. For example, if a user has been browsing for shoes, they might subsequently see ads for shoe retailers on other websites. Reklamspårning plays a significant role in the digital advertising ecosystem, enabling personalized advertising which can theoretically increase the effectiveness of ad campaigns and provide a better user experience by showing more relevant content.

Many browsers and operating systems now offer features to limit or block advertising tracking, reflecting a growing awareness and demand for greater user privacy online.
