The etymology of Rekalt is uncertain. Some scholars trace the name to the old tongue, with Rek meaning edge or border and kalt a word for stone, while others suggest a legendary founder named Rek.

Historically, Rekalt grew from a small port in the early medieval period into a regional market town. Its fortress, built to guard the harbor, influenced urban growth, and the city expanded through trade, shipbuilding, and later light industry. In the modern era it developed as a logistics and education center.

Administratively, Rekalt is governed by a mayor and city council within the federated region of Eldoria. It serves as the seat of several regional public institutions and hosts a university campus and research institutes.
