Reifencheck

A Reifencheck, commonly known as a tire check or tire inspection, is a routine examination of vehicle tires to ensure they meet safety standards and are in proper working condition. Regular tire checks are essential for maintaining vehicle safety, fuel efficiency, and longevity of the tires themselves.

During a Reifencheck, several key aspects are typically assessed. First, tire pressure is checked to ensure it matches the manufacturer’s recommended levels, usually found in the vehicle’s manual or on a sticker inside the driver’s door. Underinflated or overinflated tires can lead to poor handling, reduced fuel economy, and increased wear. Next, the tread depth is measured to confirm it meets legal minimums, which vary by region but are often around 1.6 millimeters. Insufficient tread depth compromises traction, particularly in wet or slippery conditions. The condition of the tire sidewalls is also examined for signs of damage, such as cracks, bulges, or embedded objects, which can indicate structural weakness or internal damage. Additionally, the overall alignment and balance of the tires are sometimes checked to prevent uneven wear.

Reifenchecks are recommended before long trips, at least once a month, or before and after seasonal changes to account for varying road conditions and temperature fluctuations. Many service stations, automotive dealerships, and even some gas stations offer free or low-cost tire pressure checks. Some modern vehicles also feature built-in tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) that alert drivers if a tire is significantly underinflated. While these systems provide convenience, they should not replace regular manual inspections, as they may not detect all types of tire issues.
