Registersamarbejde is a Danish term that translates to “register cooperation.” It refers to the systematic collaboration between governmental and non‑governmental agencies in managing, sharing, and maintaining administrative registers. The concept emerged in the early 2000s as part of broader European efforts to improve public service delivery, data quality, and administrative efficiency.

The main goal of registersamarbejde is to ensure that information stored in national registers—such as civil status, property, taxation, and social benefits—remains accurate, up‑to‑date, and interoperable across different institutions. By coordinating updates, harmonising data standards, and establishing secure exchange protocols, the cooperation reduces duplication of effort and eliminates inconsistencies that can hinder decision‑making or citizen services.

Key elements of the framework include legal agreements on data use, technical standards for data format and security, periodic audits, and oversight mechanisms. The Danish Ministry of the Interior and Housing serves as a coordinating authority, while agencies such as the Tax Administration, the National Housing Agency, and the Central Population Register play active roles.

Register cooperation has been credited with improving service delivery times, lowering administrative costs, and enhancing trust in public data. It also supports compliance with EU privacy regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), by enforcing stringent data‑handling standards across participating bodies.
